Navigating the Marketing Landscape: 3 Challenges for Start-ups & Scale-ups
Embarking on the journey of marketing within start-ups and scale-ups is daunting, it's filled with potential but also frustrating with challenges both internally and externally. It can take unique and skilled marketing professionals to thrive in these dynamic environments and requires creativity, adaptability, but most importantly strategic thinking!
This blog is designed to help you navigate that landscape whether you're a business owner or a marketer starting their journey in start-up or scale-up marketing.
So let's address 3 of the major challenges (there are of course more).
Limited Resources & Budgets:
Having worked with CEO's and CFO's across many sectors and businesses. The most obvious challenge facing marketing teams in start-ups and scale-ups, is the constraint of limited resources and of course budget. These companies often operate with extremely low or non-existent budgets, leaving marketing teams (I say team, but you've probably all seen the David and Victoria Beckham meme, a Head of Marketing may just be a team of one at the start). Anyway said teams tend to be expected to action ambitious growth plans with minimal financial investment and know every trending tool, platform and channel on the market.
So marketers and businesses must FOCUS!
They need to work with their teams in-house and find creative ways to maximise their marketing teams impact, utilising cost-effective marketing channels and strategies to reach their target audience. Starting with (and I know how obvious this is) a clear (and agreed upon) marketing plan with key focuses that aligns with the company strategy.
This might mean that you say no to launching a podcast or setting up the companies TikTok account, you can't do everything and learning to say no will be a skill you or your marketing team will need to adopt, if you're going to succeed.
Spread yourself too thin across too many things, and the results will be minimal or non-existent.
Growth and Scaling:
One of our favourite books is Scaling up by Verne Harnish. Because when companies start to scale, maintaining consistency across a businesses messaging, their brand identity, and customer experience becomes increasingly complex and hard to manage.
Marketers must navigate this growth phase strategically, ensuring that all marketing efforts align seamlessly with the company's expansion goals.
You'll need to avoid the task wheel (if you follow B2B Jade you'll know exactly what we are talking about) and work closely with both your Sales and Customer Success teams in order to identify how to scale, where to automate and what content is required.
Your Never Ending Tech-Stack:
In the digital age, technology plays a pivotal role in marketing and business growth and scalability. However, implementing and integrating new technologies can be challenging for start-ups with limited IT and Training resources.
Marketers and businesses need to find the right balance between adopting new tools and ensuring your teams know how to use them (especially when data is involved).
With every new platform comes a new set of processes and tools that your team need to be educated on. So be clear about what these new tools will entail, have a clear training plan for teams using it and don't try and jump before you can walk when it comes to choosing the next shiny thing.
In summary
Marketers who can successfully overcome these hurdles will contribute not only to the growth of their businesses but also become more adaptable and skilled in the world of start-up and scale-up marketing.
Never stop learning is our motto!
